Fourth Dimensionalism
What is Fourth Dimensionalism? Fourth Dimensionalism is the use of actual spatial elements for the sole purpose of creating visual imagery.
As a Fourth Dimensionalist, I approach colors scientifically, the way a mathematician approaches numbers on the number line. Since the beginning of time, the artist focus was to manipulate the human eye into believing a flat surface has space. Artists of the past and present use color, perspective, overlapping, shadowing, foreshortening and other optical illusions in order to trick the human eye. This has been the artist order since the beginning of time.
As the creator of Fourth Dimensionalism, I’ve gone against and re-wrote the artist order. I use measured space, such as, distance and depth to create paintings. Each distinct color in the color spectrum produces its own measured wavelength when encountered by light. A physicist defines a wavelength as the distance between two points. In other words, all colors have a distinct measured distance when encountered by light. Meaning all colors can be measured and all colors have their very own distinct measurement. This is the foundation of Fourth Dimensionalism.
Fourth Dimensionalism equates colors to measured distances on the number line. The warm colors, such as reds, oranges and yellows are considered positive numbers on the number line, meaning they protrude from the surface of the canvas. The cool colors, such as, greens, blues, violets are considered negative numbers on the number line, meaning they descend within the surface of the canvas. The surface of the canvas is considered zero on the number line and like the number line the positive and negative numbers starts at zero. Depending on how they are used, in its purity, the colors black and white can be used in positive and/or negative manner.
It’s very important to keep in mind that the measured distances of all colors can and will be change in a positive or negative direction with the mixing of other colors. Like numbers on the number line, in Fourth Dimensionalism, the creation of various color zones are infinite.
The application of color in Fourth Dimensionalism is through distinct and individual brushstroke, the process is called wet on dry. In other words, the initial color applied to the surface should be topically dried before applying the next layer of color. Meaning each color applied should be in its purest state throughout the painting process and not chemically mixed with the underlying color or colors. Each individual brushstroke is considered its own distinct plane or entity. Each brushstroke or plane has its own role and function, but works as a unit for a specific purpose.
The focus and effect of Fourth Dimensionalism is creating continual rhythmic vibrations throughout a painting by the manipulation of measured distances(colors). In effect, the continual rhythmic vibration literally creates movement within a painting. The *rhythmic vibration effect* gives my paintings a life-like appeal. As I like to say, "Bring a painting to life."
